Hello again friends, bloggers and muses,

If you’ve been blogging for some amount of time, you’ve likely bumped into this blogger at some point. She’s gained an impressive following in a short period of time. She’s real, humble, and shares her struggles with the world in a way that can only come through courage and acceptance of one’s self. I do admire her, and I’m happy to share this interview with the rest of you.

The Interview

Mathew: Hey Vee, it’s so great to have you here. 😀
I’ve truly been looking forward to this. You’ve started on the blogging scene in early 2019 and you’ve exploded as a personality here on WordPress with nearly 3000 followers by this time in August. Most would say that’s quite the impressive fete.

My first question for you is what compelled you to get into blogging in the first place? What’s your story?

Vee: I’m so nervous! Thank you for your interest in having me partake in Behind the Author. It’s quite the honour and I definitely don’t take it lightly.

Initially I created the blog because I wanted a place to vent. I’ve always been a bit of a writer, so to speak, but never really published or promoted my words for people to see. Over the past few months my blog has morphed into more than I could ever have dreamed!

Mathew: If you were asked honestly, what’s the trick to garnering a loyal following, what would you say?

Vee: I would say that when it comes to blogging, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to be authentic. I believe that authenticity is one of the characteristics people appreciate most in others. If you want to attract an audience, authenticity is a must. Also, it’s very important to show appreciation for the people who do read your blog. If someone takes the time to read your blog and leave a comment on one of your posts, let them know you’re thankful for that. After all, they can spend their time any way they please, so the fact that they choose to spend their precious moments reading your words, it’s a real privilege.

While I would still be sharing/writing on my blog if there were only two people reading it, knowing that so many people do read it is very humbling and motivating. I’m thankful for those that take the time to read my blog and I want to ensure they know that. I don’t think that anything I have to say is all that special (so many people speak of the very same subjects I do on their own blogs), and I think that’s where authenticity comes in. At least that’s how I hope people see it.

Mathew: Why do you choose to use the pseudo name Vee? Is it short for your real world name?

Vee: Vee is my nickname and it is short for my legal name. My family and friends call me Vee and my nieces and nephews call me Auntie VeeVee. Since I wasn’t exactly sure what route I wanted to take my blog when I started it, I thought that referring to myself as Vee was a smart move. I’m a very shy person by nature and definitely don’t like to draw attention to myself, so using a nickname appealed to me. As time went on, the name just stuck!

Mathew: I’m aware that you’ve been job hunting for a while now and it’s been somewhat of a struggle for you. I can relate with your situation right now as I transition to returning to school and having lost my job recently. Have you put much thought into going professional as a blogger? Why or why not?

Vee: The idea has been brought to my attention by a couple of people in my life and a few people who read my blog, so I’ve definitely pondered it. I’ll never say never, but definitely not right now. Right now I’m simply appreciating the moment, the community of people supporting my blog and having a place to share.

I think there’ll come a time in my life when I’m ready, willing and desirous to work for myself. And, if I’m lucky enough to have an audience that would support me at that time, I’d make a go of it… and definitely try a lot harder to properly edit my posts when I do!

Mathew: I’ve noticed that you love to travel. That means you’re a woman after my own heart! I share your passion. Which countries or places have you been to that will be forever special to you and what’s one place that you would still love to visit?

Vee: I fell head over heels for a small town in Northern Germany called Flensburg. The cobblestone streets wove a unique maze through a town that has more culture and history in one block than all of Canada combined (and I mean that throwing no shade at my homeland). The people were welcoming and loving of my Canadianness and the food was some of the most memorable meals I have had in my 30 years on this earth. I definitely see myself spending more time there in the future.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for Ketchikan, Alaska and the Oregon Coast… both for very different reasons, but also because I’m a true West Coast soul at heart and a sucker for a beautiful sunset. Truthfully, I love everywhere that I get to visit because I’m passionate about chasing adventure and finding new experiences.

As for a place I would still love to go, I have so many places that I want to see! High on my list would be Bhutan, specifically Paro Takstang. If you google it, you’ll understand the appeal!

Mathew: Thanks again so much for agreeing to participate in this interview Vee! I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule for this. My last question to you is, what does the future have in store for Vee? What lights a fire in your heart for the years to come?

Vee: Thank you for selecting me as one of the people you’re featuring in this series. I’m honoured, and I am appreciative for the time, effort and thought you’ve put into this series thus far. I feel grateful that of all the people you could/can choose for your series, you’ve asked me.

I’m open to the prospects the future holds for me. At this stage of my life, I don’t want to close any doors. That being said, if the future could bring me a lot of love and hopefully a lot of travel, I could see myself being very happy.

Eventually I’d like to write a book on the subject of travel. Think of Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Parts Unknown’… from a soft-spoken millennial debunking the myths about my generation in the process. With how many corners of the world there are to discover, I don’t think the market could ever be too saturated.

The After-Thought

Well, there you have it folks. Another interview in the books. I hope that none of you became sick of two Canadians thanking each other incessantly throughout this interview, that’s just how we roll here in Canada! 😀 At least neither of us hurt each other’s feelings or else the amount of sorry’s would have been unbearable.

I kid, I kid.

I hope that you all learned something special about one of your favorite bloggers, and if you hadn’t met Vee before, now you know her. She gave us some great advice on how she became successful with her blog and the matter of the fact is – she doesn’t try too hard. She is just one of those people that draw others towards her, and she’s humble. She has no “secrets” to offer.

However, as an outside observer I can tell you that she has a wonderful social media presence, she puts time into her work, her writing is quality and she is also very good at establishing a community on her blog. Her gratitude is endearing and her love is a magnet. We can all take this as a humble reminder that as readers, we’re not only looking for great content but at the person behind content. Be someone who inspires and warms others and you will earn their hearts.
