Hello again friends, bloggers and muses,

Parting with tradition, today’s interview will be even more different than usual. My dear friend Yeka and our guest from last week’s Behind the Author interview has offered to guest host the series for one week in an effort to turn the tables on me.

Before our fellow blogger Dragon Warrior left us, she talked about how she would have loved to see me on the receiving end of one of these, and so, with that in mind, I’ve accepted Yeka’s offer. Although, I do tend to prefer to be the one in control of the spotlight, rather than smack dab in the middle of it. Next week it’s back to our regular programming as usual! 😛

Yeka: Boldness, courage, determination, tenacity, loyalty, leadership, authenticity, freedom. These are some outstanding qualities of a wolf that are unapologetically embedded in Mathew’s Blog of the Wolf Boy.  Today, we get to unravel the mystery behind this compelling, enigmatic blog. Today, we meet the author shrouded in mystery. The power behind the power blog.

The Interview

Yeka: Hi Mathew! I was amazed with your rapidly growing Wolf Cub Community. I’ve always been fascinated with wolves. I love how they are fiercely loyal and protective. I’d like to appreciate further the inspiration behind Blog of the Wolf Boy.

Mathew: Thanks Yeka, it feels very strange to be on the receiving end of one of these, but I couldn’t have asked for a better interviewer. Wolves are fiercely loyal and protective, that’s true. I’ve always admired how wolves can be strong on their own as well as in a pack. That when they travel as a group the strong take the front and back to protect the weaker wolves in the middle. I’m a pretty protective person by nature and maybe that’s one of the reasons why wolves have always resonated with me….

This blog really only started as a fun writing hobby project while I tried to pass the time as I recovered from an injury. I was unable to work and writing always made me feel well. Aside from that, I’ve always felt like I’ve had a lot to say about the world and to the world, yet I was too introverted to actually get my voice out there. Social media felt depressing and this just seemed like the way to go… It’s been a real blast actually.

Yeka: I recall how we touched base. As an introvert, I was drawn to your post titled “A Survival Guide for Introverts”. I found it quite charming and witty. Would you like to share how being an introvert helps you write excellently?

Mathew: Oh boy, I love this question. I’ve spent a lot of time in solitude. I’ve spent a lot of time soul searching. I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating existence and the Universe. Contemplating our societies and our nature, contemplating how far we’ve come and in some ways, how far we’ve slipped backwards. I’ve struggled endlessly with different obstacles, and much of it, I did without a lot of strong support. Some of my struggles have been self-inflicted and some of them were due to my unlucky draw of the cards.

Why is this relevant to your question?

Well, there’s a fountain of deep reflection and ideas inside of me which has been gushing for a lifetime. It’s made me comfortable with who I am, it’s made me strong and it’s helped me to better understand others in difficult situations. I think, in that way, being an introvert has given me plenty of ideas to work with and my self-reflection has given me great empathy for others. It’s also helped me to be authentic. Being introverted means that I have troubles expressing everything inside of me verbally, so writing is a natural fit for me. I hope that answers that.

Yeka: Your poetry is astounding. It strikes a chord in readers’ hearts with raw authenticity and vulnerability. What gives you the boldness and courage to tread uncommon grounds of mystery and darkness?

Mathew: That’s kind of you to say. I think everyone’s idea of what makes for good poetry is different, but for me, good poetry evokes emotion. All of the formatting and meter and other BS is irrelevant and at times, pretentious. Good poetry comes from the heart and reflects the truth of reality, or emotion. It took me a while to learn to be comfortable enough to just strip away all the rules from poetry and just to write it as it comes from my soul. So far, since I’ve went this route with my poems, I’ve created my favorite little masterpieces and I’m hoping to self-publish some of my best into a book very shortly.

Then if others want to support me, they can, but I really just want to buy one for my daughter when she’s older. Thank you Amazon self-publishing! 😉

Yeka: I noticed the recurring themes of mental health and anxiety, coupled with health, motivation, and inspiration in your blog. How do you strike a beautiful balance in your posts?

Mathew: So, my posts may seem balanced now but they haven’t always been. In the beginning I would have weeks where I was too mopey, and weeks where I just wanted to shove positivity down everyone else’s throats. I enjoy writing light stuff and dark stuff. Although everything I write affects my own mental well-being so I need to be careful. I really absorb whatever I do.

Fortunately for me, over time I was able to make a backlog of scheduled posts (I’m at about 11 right now or so…). This has helped me to keep things more balanced, because I can plan how my content is delivered over the next two weeks or so and I can spread it out so that it’s balanced. That’s been my biggest saving grace, and I can just write how I feel then schedule it an appropriate slot.

Yeka: Your blog is quite impressive in terms of quality, interest, artistry, and diversity of content. What approach do you take when you publish posts? Is there a science to it? Or is it purely based on art?

Mathew: Thank you again… Quality is probably because I’m a little bit obsessive. I’ll re-edit most posts 2 or 3 times at least after I’ve come up with a solid draft. Usually my best editing comes more than a day or two after I’ve finished my “final draft”, because my mind is in a different place. My creativity is my biggest asset and I’m just fortunate to be blessed with a vivid imagination. I’ve always been a dreamer of sorts. I’m capable of seeing beauty in ugliness and sometimes ugliness in what most consider beauty. It’s a gift and a curse, I guess.

At the end of the day, I just won’t release a post unless I’m proud of it and would want to read it myself. Some of my favorite posts have never become the smash hits that I thought they would, and some of my posts which I didn’t think much of became my most popular, like that Survival Guide for Introverts. It’s a weird thing, I tell ya!

Yeka: Well, congratulations again Matthew! Your blog has clearly won the hearts of many among us. You write with such passion and depth. You present fresh, intelligent insights. And you effortlessly connect with your readers. I will continue to be a staunch supporter and I will wear my Wolf Cub Community badge with pride!

So, lastly …. On a personal note, I’ve read that you love tattoos. What’s your favorite tattoo story? … and would you like to share any upcoming collaborations that our Wolf Club Community can look forward to?

Mathew: Hahah, thanks for offering to host this Yeka. It’s been a refreshing experience and I see you have what it takes to be a great interviewer. 😉

I’m not sure that I would say my ability to connect with my readers is effortless. I feel like I’ve struggled at times to pull my head out of my work and to really connect with other’s content often enough. I can be so immersed in trying to be creative than I sometimes need to remind myself to mingle more.

As for my tattoos, oh boy, my favorite tattoo with a story is probably my grape vines with red-back spiders memorializing the time that I’d spent working on a vineyard in Australia. (Still very fresh and raw in this picture). My favorite tattoo is my baby girl’s hand-print over my heart though, surrounded by space and color.

As far as collaborations go, I have nothing in the works right now. This was my only collaboration in the works. In early September I’ll be in University full time and I’m thinking my posts may drop to every other day or something as well… I haven’t decided yet, but I guess I’m still trying to figure out how seriously I want to be taking this blog while working a full course load and working part-time. At least my course should provide me with some good writing material. Maybe just shorter posts!

The After-Thought

Yeka: If wolves could articulate their musings, they’d be found in this blog. Having gained a richer view into the man who has grabbed positive attention here on WordPress, we can now see why he has markedly earned the respect of our community. He maintains his singularity of vision, spreading his powerful messages about the world and to the world.

His strong-willed, never-surrender views captivate both the thinkers and the feelers among us. He remarkably lives a life that is bathed in authenticity, and that is the very reason that he moves us. His unadulterated messages drum up an increased awareness among his readers and help them take a plunge into their own thought world. Wow, being the guest host this week has been my deepest honor! After all, it isn’t everyday that one gets to understand the mind and the heart of a “Wolf Boy”.
