The Silk Curtain Drops
(The Wolf Boy’s Poem)
The silk curtain gently drops
The ticking of the clock stops
The last glass of fresh water
Last breath before the slaughter
A fading smile from a loved child
A million memories run wild
All consuming lack of everything
All-knowing void of anything
Recycle ingredients, soul by soul
Life departs, yet, finally whole
Life
(Brad’s Poem)
The first breath of air at birth
An intrinsic and fragile worth
With days that have some number
Yet no fear of eternal slumber
We live away our precious day
For life in us will surely stay
An ever present, loving friend
We cannot contemplate an end
Revel in existence and in light
Forego your fears of impending night
Life’s Silk Curtain Drops
(The Wolf Boy + Brad Combined)
The silk curtain gently drops
The first breath of air at birth
The ticking of the clock stops
An intrinsic and fragile worth
The last glass of fresh water
With days that have some number
Last breath before the slaughter
Yet no fear of eternal slumber
A fading smile from a loved child
We live away our precious day
A million memories run wild
For life in us will surely stay
All consuming lack of everything
An ever present, loving friend
All-knowing void of anything
We cannot contemplate an end
Recycle ingredients, soul by soul
Revel in existence and in light
Life departs, yet, finally whole
Forego your fears of impending night
This fantastic poem combination idea was suggested to me by Brad from Common Sensibly Speaking, he’s a great writer and a smart guy. Check out his blog for some more quality content. Writing this was a fun time! So thank you Brad. 🙂
I agree–this was a great idea! Made especially thought-provoking by the subject. Not only varied faces of the same planet, but varied voices, since each of you have a unique style. Also, the fact that you introduced the two separate poems first, and then the combination, made it all the more interesting. Most people would’ve just said, hey, we wrote a poem together, and then posted the one only. I thought this was more powerful in displaying the two individual ones followed by the combination. It gave a continuity to it, a process.
Speaking of continuity, to me, the poem felt more about time than the cycle of life and death–and perhaps that was the intention! Time is such a monster in my mind when I consider its inescapable inevitability. Like the riddle in The Hobbit! I don’t remember it word for word, but something about gnawing and biting and grinding and devouring. I just remember the verbs, haha. Anyway, beautiful work, both of you.

“The thing all things devours
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers
Gnaws iron, bites steel
Grinds hard stones to meal
Slays king, ruins town
And beats high mountain down!
(Time)”
😉 I had to look it up. Yes, I suppose it’s about time as well. Life and Death is very much about time and how much time we have left. I’m glad you appreciated the style. I thought it was a cool poem idea! Thanks for dropping a comment and your words of support 🙂

This poem mash-up was such a good idea! When I saw the heading that you were mashing the poems together I thought to myself, “that’s not going to work 💁♀️”. Boy am I happy you proved me wrong. The mashed poem turned out beautiful and gave me the feels ❤️
