Break these heavy chains from off my wrists –
shatter these restraints and burst my cysts.
You’ve tied me down and pushed me ’round
to act like a Queen who’s been self-crowned.
Days have passed living beneath your authority,
democratically contributing to us as a minority.
Just a present-being begging for equality,
but with no signs of personal rights nor apology;
just a distorted image of myself abound
towards a freedom that may prove profound.
~
Every little twist and turn in the road lingers
as I escape the grip you hold between two fingers,
and I escape the cold that pierces like wooden splinters
frostier than the deepest chill on the coolest Winters.
A heart that bleeds from the contemplation
on this once deceptive love, now not but an aberration.
~
Cruel cruel world,
come unfurled,
as I long for the sweet song of those fairy tales.
Heed the scratches from those nails
and instead, blow some wind beneath my sails.
~
Raised to believe that happy endings may be destiny,
yet it feels as if the slick hand of fate takes the best of me
to be drawn through the torrents of rain
which downpour in thick disappointment and pain.
~
Forgive me not- for all I’ve been,
comfort me not- for all I’ve seen,
remorse for me not- for my broken past
this life is fleeting and retreating fast.
~
Today I’m climbing to a mountain’s peak –
shrouded in clouds my path seems bleak,
but I seek to prove that I’m not so weak
and when I arrive at the top with my own two feet,
I shall prove myself proud without an air of conceit.
Beautifully written.. this life is fleeting and retreating fast…too good

The entire poem is outstanding but this last part is awesome……made me want to stand up and cheer!

Hi Mathew,
I cannot agree with simplywendi more! Well done!
I would like to ask you about the number of lines in each of your stanzas. Is there a pattern there and why have you chosen to vary the number of lines from stanza to stanza?

It’s free verse, there’s no structure to my rhymes. I simply say it out loud as I write it, and as long as my message is clear and complete, I flow with it.
Thanks so much for your comment. 😊

I think it’s lovely the way you’ve written in self respect and belief in oneself. So much in life tries to shred those things. We’re such sensitive beings but we don’t have to Lose our sensitivity to be strong

Thanks for your comment. I 100% believe that the strongest people in the world can be both strong and sensitive ❤
