University, Updates and Reflections

It’s been a while since I’ve just written without any real objective in my writing, and sometimes that spurs all sorts of different revelations or reflections. So, today I thought that I would return to that sort of writing…

Let’s start with, what’s been new with me?

Well, I’ve been working hard at my studies since September, and I’ve had a few setbacks along the way but I’m not unhappy with where I am right now. Adjusting to University life has been somewhat of an ordeal for me as I’ve never experienced anything but College studies in the past (those two are different in Canada). Universities expect a higher quality of work, longer essays and they expect academic sources to be used in your research. College isn’t as fussy when it comes to sources or citations.

It’s been great to be able to read more, and in fact, I’ve been forced to read ALOT more! It’s been nice to read a lot more, but I did have to push myself quite hard in the beginning, to change my lifestyle and accommodate for the hours upon hours of reading that I wasn’t doing before. ‘Tis the life of an English Major!

Studying literature was also quite different than I had expected it to be. I love reading novels, and I enjoy de-constructing them, but literary criticism can at times feel… frustrating?

Taking an interest in writing as a hobby/passion and looking at literature with a critical perspective is quite different, and I’m not one hundred percent sure that I enjoy the literary criticism stuff as much as I was hoping I would. I love to write. I love to play with people’s expectations and have fun with my aesthetics. I love to read and experience literature, but it’s another thing altogether to disassemble and critique literature.

So far, the courses that I’ve enjoyed the most this term are my Creative Writing, Psychology and, Social and Political Thought classes. There may be a switch with my Major in the near future, but it won’t stop me from wanting to pursue being an author and a writer. I’ve always been very interested in the study of Psychology. I’ve spent my entire life introspecting and deciphering my own behaviours and patterns, as well as observing those around me, so, I’d be pretty happy to study Psych too!

I’ve also just joined my school newspaper, The Sputnik, as a writer and recently, contributed my first article to the paper about how to keep down stress levels with exams looming closeby. So, that’s cool, I guess? My creative writing class also contributed a number of Haiku’s to be printed by the Sputnik, of which I was one.

In positive news, I’d also been contacted a few weeks ago via email by a publication called Prehistoric Magazine letting me know that my short story about the Neanderthal will be published in their December issue. Woot, woot! I have a few other publications considering work of mine, but I’m just having fun putting some stuff out there.

I’m still searching for a job while I go to school, but I have found some temp work that’s been keeping me busy on the weekends and helping offset my debt accumulation a little bit. I’ve been considering the Canadian Military Reserves as a possible side-gig. I’m hoping my life will start to come together a bit more over the course of the next year and a lot of these little insecurities about this transition period will be behind me then, I mean, there’s always going to be something anyways…

Besides all of that, it’s cold outside and I’m still trying to get to the gym three times a week but it looks like my running days are just about over for the year. Still writing poetry in my free-time and working on my guest posts/interviews when I can (submit your poems to Wild Poetry). Also, loving the Dad life, of course!

I hope you’ve all been well, and I’m sorry if I haven’t kept up with your blogs these past few months as closely as I have in the past. I’ve just had very little time for leisure reading and when I do have a few minutes to spare for my blog it’s usually to write. It is my therapy after all!

Wishing all of my readers the very best! ❤

Also, happy Remembrance Day to all of the Veterans here in Canada and abroad

      1. Hey, each publication is important. And I hope you get it and you frame it so that one day, in your future home, you can have alll your published pieces framed in your home office to show off

      2. I think it just serves as a reminder that every publication is a stepping stone to a really great career. And you, my friend, are destined for a really successful career.

  1. Thanks for the update!
I’m glad to hear you are doing well. It sounds like you are busy, but in a good way.
I have been pretty terrible about keeping up on reading other blogs too. It is really hard when you are balancing school, work, kids, and your own writing. I get it.
Congrats on being published! That is exciting news!

      1. Aww thanks Mat that’s very sweet. It makes me feel good. Yes definitely keeping me busy. Whether you have one or three, kids are work nonetheless. All parents are superheroes 😉

    1. My Social and Political Thought class is actually all about philosophy. This term it’s really revolving around politics though. Mills, Burke, Kant, Tocqueville, Montesquieu, Hobbes. But we did touch upon Darwin (whom I’ve already read his book) and a few others. It’s my favorite class. 😁

      1. Wow amazing! Enjoy as much as you can and swallow every word and thought said and read in this class.. argue and discuss everything. It is all about freedom, peace and love!

  2. It is good to hear about your being published. Your work deserves to be seen by more people. I am also glad things have slipped into some normalcy for you. Stay strong, work hard, and know that we are here if you need us!

  3. seems like you have settled into your studies, and that it did not take too long. I think I would be like you; the literary criticism stuff would not appeal to me either. Congrats on your publications – that is awesome. Good luck with the end of the semester.
